Access to health and menstrual hygiene is a vital issue in Madagascar. Infrastructure in rural areas is dilapidated and often inadequate. In Alakamisy Ambohimaha, the CSB II clinic lacked lighting, medical supplies, and basic equipment, making care conditions precarious, particularly during childbirth. We decided to intervene by rehabilitating the clinic and raising awareness among the population about menstrual hygiene, a subject that is too often taboo.
1. Rehabilitation of the CSB II dispensary
Our actions
We undertook a complete renovation of the CSB II dispensary in Alakamisy Ambohimaha to improve care and reception conditions for patients and medical staff. This renovation affected all of the dispensary’s buildings, ensuring a clean, safe, and functional environment for the local population. In addition, the dispensary was completely reequipped with medical equipment and devices, allowing for optimal care and better working conditions for healthcare staff.

2. Menstrual hygiene awareness
Our actions
Alongside the rehabilitation of the clinic, we conducted a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign in the 11 surrounding villages. This campaign, essential for women’s health and dignity, aimed to break down taboos surrounding menstruation and educate both men and women about the importance of good menstrual hygiene.
Joint awareness workshops
- Disseminate information about female physiology and the hygiene conditions necessary for basic health security
- Deconstructing bad practices and preconceived ideas surrounding menstruation
Distribution of reusable menstrual kits
- for about 1 year to young Malagasy girls in order to restore their dignity, privacy and security.

“Since the TAMANA association’s intervention in 2022, our clinic has undergone a real transformation. Thanks to the complete renovation of our infrastructure and the re-equipment provided, we have observed a significant improvement in the number of patients visiting our center.
Patients are now coming in ever-increasing numbers. In fact, since the renovation, we have seen a 37% increase in the number of consultations compared to the previous year, in 2023.”

Project impact
- Improving living conditions for more than 35,000 residents
- Reducing risks associated with childbirth and prenatal care
- 24/7 access to quality care thanks to photovoltaic electricity
- Raising awareness of menstrual hygiene among hundreds of women and men
- Distribution of reusable kits that allow women to live their daily lives with dignity and safety.
Sustainability of the project
The TAMANA project is based on a rigorous quality assessment protocol for the CSB II of Alakamisy Ambohimaha, with regular monitoring carried out by the head doctor and the Mayor of the commune. They provide detailed monthly reports that are analyzed by the management team to intervene quickly if necessary. At the same time, TAMANA is committed to sustaining and expanding its menstrual hygiene awareness activities, particularly among young girls at the commune’s General Education College. Monthly surveys are carried out to assess the impact of the workshops, and if necessary, additional awareness sessions will be organized to maintain awareness on this essential subject.
